Ahead of WorldSkills Ireland 2025 we caught up with some of our apprentices participating in the joinery and carpentry competitions
We’re proud to support the joinery and carpentry competitions at WorldSkills, where three of our talented apprentices will be showcasing their skills during the event. Matthew Heavey and Cathal O'Regan will be competing in the joinery competition and Darragh Brett will compete in the carpentry. We wish them the very best of luck!

Darragh Brett is competing in the carpentry competition
Darragh said: “I did it last year and know what to expect. I was more nervous last year because I didn’t know what was coming, but now I know what to worry about people watching me and I’ll be grand.
“In school I was interested in practical subjects and I didn’t like languages. Even at home, I used to work with my dad outside so I had a good interest in it.
“I would recommend an apprenticeship because everyday is different and when you make something you’ve made this is great to see. You also get paid to learn."

Cathal O’Regan is competing in the joinery competition
Cathal said: “I’m a bit nervous but we have done a lot of work to prepare. We’ve been doing a lot of early mornings to practice.
“I’ve always wanted to do carpentry and the easiest way in was to do an apprenticeship in four years. In school I did woodwork and construction studies and I always enjoyed both of these subjects.
“If you are interested in carpentry or doing a trade, I would recommend an apprenticeship.”
