York Central hits major milestone

Our York Central project achieved a key milestone yesterday with the first phase of the infrastructure works opening  to the public for the first time. The first phase of the £150m new infrastructure includes a new 1.5km development spine road with associated footways, cycleways, bus routes, extensive SUDS features and soft landscaping.

At the heart of this phase is the new Hudson Boulevard, a 480m long public realm area providing segregated footpath and cycleway routes into the rear of York Railway Station.

The new infrastructure unlocks access to the site for the wider development works which aims to deliver 2,500 new homes, 1m square feet of commercial space and 6,000 new employment opportunities.

Our team have been working collaboratively with lead client, Homes England and key project stakeholders City of York Council, Network Rail and the National Railway Museum to deliver this technically challenging brownfield remediation and infrastructure scheme to achieve this key milestone.

Works will continue on site with the second phase of the infrastructure works, which includes the installation of a new footbridge, an iconic road over rail bridge and complex reinforced earth embankments and earth retaining structures. Once complete the full route will link the York Central Development site with the city centre.

Matt Mosley, regional director on behalf of Sisk Infrastructure, said: “Sisk is proud to have led the construction of this key infrastructure for the City of York.

"The new multiuser network will be the catalyst for expanding the city and providing residential and commercial benefits throughout the region. We have collaborated closely with our client, Homes England, driving best value solutions and significant social value benefits. We would like to thank the Sisk team and our supply chain partners for their support through delivery of this first phase.”

Leon Guyett, project director on behalf of Homes England and Network Rail, said: "The opening of the new road, walking and cycling routes is a huge step forward for the project, providing safer and more attractive journeys into the city centre for pedestrians, cyclists, bus users and drivers.

“The route will not only provide modern sustainable transport infrastructure but will also assist in unlocking York Central for new homes, public realm and commercial space.”
