In 2022, we completed a major upgrade to Howth Middle Pier for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), widening the pier and creating a 134m-long vertical mooring space on the western side. A new revetment line was also added on the eastern side to provide additional structural support.
Stabilisation of Dredge Material
Together with Newton Engineers, we used advanced German-engineered equipment, including an Allu mixing processing head and Bauer grout plant, to stabilise the dredge material. By mixing the dredge in cells with wet grout, we expanded the pier’s footprint from 6,000m² to 14,000m².
Collaboration with marine specialists Byrne Looby allowed us to design and install precast sea walls instead of full in-situ construction, ensuring the highest safety standards for our diving team. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) provided toolbox talks and helped implement man overboard safety procedures, contributing to the project’s incident-free completion.
Sustainable Approach to Waste Reduction
Unlike traditional dredging projects where material is discarded at sea or sent to landfill, we repurposed dredge material as part of the permanent works. More than 6,000m³ of dredged material was treated and placed on the pier’s east side, forming a stable foundation for the new berthing area.
DAFM procured the project with a blended client and contractor design approach. Working alongside Malachy Walsh and Partners, we developed innovative solutions for sea wall construction and material reuse, ensuring a sustainable and efficient approach to marine infrastructure.
