Maria Estrada, Project Manager, Sisk shares our findings after a year of testing low carbon concrete

We are proud to announce the successful completion of the Scalable Low Carbon Demonstrator Project and its last milestone, marking a major breakthrough in our journey toward decarbonising construction.
After a year of rigorous testing in line with BSI FLEX 350 V1, our technical report with the findings is completed and available to download here. This initiative demonstrates that low-carbon concrete can be delivered at scale without compromising performance.

Why This Matters?
Funded by Innovate UK under its Contracts for Innovation programme, this initiative is more than a successful demonstration - it’s about sharing knowledge. The findings in the report captures a year of rigorous testing and provides practical insights, performance data, and recommendations for implementing low-carbon concrete solutions at scale.

By documenting these results, we aim to collaborate with industry stakeholders, researchers, and policy makers with actionable information that accelerates innovation, informs future standards, and supports the transition to a net-zero built environment. This report is a significant step toward making sustainable construction practices mainstream.

What we achieved
•    World-first structural use of Ecocem’s ACT Technology on a live construction site at Quintain’s Wembley Park NE02/03.
•    ACT is a ternary cement blend which delivers up to 70% reduction in embodied carbon compared to traditional concrete with 20% CEM I, 30% SCM (GGBS in this case), and 50% ground limestone filler.
•    Tested across multiple applications: ready-mix and precast concrete and structural elements including slabs, walls, columns, and stairs
•    Verified through mechanical, durability, and environmental performance testing by Loughborough University and BRE, with life cycle analysis by Sisk.

Collaboration at its best
This achievement was made possible by a consortium of industry leaders:
Sisk, Ecocem, Ramboll Group, Loughborough University, Creagh Concrete, Capital Concrete, BRE Group, and Quintain Ltd - all united by a common goal: to rapidly decarbonise concrete and construction.

Open access for industry
In the spirit of collaboration and transparency, the technical report is freely available to the industry. We believe open access to knowledge is essential for driving meaningful change and fostering collective progress toward net-zero goals.

Looking Ahead
This project sets a benchmark for future standards and specifications. Together, we are shaping a future where scalable, low-carbon solutions become the norm for construction and infrastructure development.
